چکیده

Abstract. A method for objectively extracting the displacement signals associated with coherent eddies from Lagrangian trajectories is presented, refined, and applied to a large dataset of 3770 surface drifters Gulf Mexico. The method, wavelet ridge analysis, general analysis modulated oscillations, here modified be more suitable eddy-detection problem. means formally assessing statistical significance introduced, addressing issue false positives arising by chance an unstructured turbulent background opening door confident application very datasets. Significance measured through frequency-dependent comparison stochastic having spectral properties that match original, but lacking organized oscillations due or waves. Mexico reveals major asymmetries between cyclones anticyclones, anticyclones dominating at radii larger than about 50 km, unexpectedly rich population highly nonlinear smaller radii. Both eddy are made freely available community noncommercial use in future research.

Wavelet ridge diagnosis of time-varying elliptical signals with application to an oceanic eddy

A method for diagnosing the physical properties of a time-varying ellipse is presented. This essentially involves extending the notion of instantaneous frequency to the bivariate case. New complications, and possibilities, arise from the fact that there are several meaningful forms in which a time-varying ellipse may be represented. A perturbation analysis valid for the near-circular case clari...

Capturing eddy shedding in the Gulf of Mexico from Lagrangian observations

The nonlinear process of eddy shedding is studied in the context of the Gulf of Mexico. We show that model runs which do not include eddy detachment can reproduce such an event with the assimilation of suitable data obtained from a control run with eddy detachment. This works surprisingly well and with small amounts of data provided the data originates from instruments that are carried by the f...

Extracting statistically significant behaviour from fish tracking data with and without large dataset cleaning

Extracting a statistically significant result from video data of natural phenomenon can be difficult for two reasons: i) there can be considerable natural variation in the observed behaviour, and ii) computer vision algorithms applied to natural phenomena may not perform correctly on a significant number of samples. This paper presents one approach to cleaning of a large noisy visual tracking d...

Towards The Web of Concepts: Extracting Concepts from Large Datasets

Concepts are sequences of words that represent real or imaginary entities or ideas that users are interested in. As a first step towards building a web of concepts that will form the backbone of the next generation of search technology, we develop a novel technique to extract concepts from large datasets. We approach the problem of concept extraction from corpora as a market-basket problem, ada...
